Marion “Knute” Knutson – Mitchell Republic

Fast Metropolis – Marion Dean Knutson, age 91, died peacefully on December 9, 2022 at Fountain Springs Healthcare in Fast Metropolis, SD. Marion was born on 10/23/31 in Letcher, SD. His dad and mom, Clarence and Josephine, had 6 youngsters and he was the youngest. Marion, “Knute” grew up in Letcher. He helped his dad and brothers farming, trucking and shopping for feeder cattle whereas rising up.

After graduating from Letcher Excessive College in 1949 he attended South Dakota College of Mines and Expertise, majoring in civil engineering and geology. Throughout this era, he mapped a good portion of the Wind Cave system. There’s a story about Knute and good good friend Gene Toland being caught beneath a President’s nostril on Mount Rushmore.

He’s survived by his youngsters: Dr. Katherine “Kate” Knutson (Dr. Steve Barghusen), Bloomington, MN, Rebecca “Joey” Knutson, Black Hawk, Patrick “Pat” Knutson (Kristin), Spicewood, TX, and Mathew “Matt” Knutson, Fast Metropolis; 4 grandchildren: Alicia Cuny, Chase and Tucker Knutson, and LaTosha Barnes; three great-grandchildren: Vanessa Cuny and Dontae and Noah Barnes. He was preceded in loss of life by his dad and mom; brothers, LeRoy, Darwin, Delbert and sister Kathleen; daughter, Vicky Knutson; and Darlene Knutson.

Visitation can be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 14 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Residence. The funeral can be 11:00 am Thursday on the funeral house.

Burial can be 2:00 pm at Black Hills Nationwide Cemetery close to Sturgis, SD with full army honors.
